Which AI Search Optimization Startups Get Cited Most

AI engines don’t cite the same sources, and they don’t cite the same startups either. Across 500 prompts run through ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, one competitor’s domain outpaced every other AI-visibility vendor: tryprofound.com, cited in 15.8% of all 8,695 answers. But no single startup owns this category. A long tail of smaller platforms — rankability.com, siftly.ai, therankmasters.com, llmpulse.ai, and others — each earned meaningful citation share of their own, and which one shows up depends heavily on what topic the question falls under.

How we ran this test

We built this test at Yogoo AI to see what actually gets cited, not what marketers assume gets cited. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini were tested through their APIs with live web search turned on: GPT-4o-mini + web search (API), Claude Haiku 4.5 + web search, and Gemini 2.5 Flash + web search. Google AI Overviews results come from live Google searches and Perplexity from its Sonar API, so those numbers are close to what a person sees.

The startups winning AI citations right now

Across all 8,695 answers, these AI-visibility and AI-search-optimization vendors earned the most citation share:

Domain% of answers citing
tryprofound.com15.8%
rankability.com9.4%
siftly.ai7.7%
therankmasters.com7.4%
llmpulse.ai7.2%
airops.com6.3%
trysight.ai6.3%
useomnia.com6.2%
otterly.ai5.9%
slatehq.com5.6%

tryprofound.com leads by a wide margin, but the next nine spots are close together, none more than 4 points apart. This is a category where citation share is spread across a long tail of similarly-sized players rather than locked up by one or two dominant names.

How does citation behavior differ by topic?

Which of these startups gets cited also depends on what the question is about. The 449 unbranded prompts split into 12 topic clusters, and the sources each engine reached for shifted from one cluster to the next.

"AEO Fundamentals" and "AEO Tools & Platforms" prompts leaned hardest on hubspot.com, with tryprofound.com showing up frequently in both. ‘AI SEO’ and ‘AI Search Optimization’ prompts both pulled onelittleweb.com and youtube.com most often. Their third-place domains differ: rankability.com for ‘AI SEO,’ tryprofound.com for ‘AI Search Optimization’. The two practical how-to clusters both put reddit.com at the top. ‘Practical AI Visibility How-To’ had youtube.com in second place, but ‘How to Track Brand Mentions’ saw keyword.com edge ahead of YouTube into second, with YouTube landing third. “Choosing a Citation Tracking Platform” pulled from youtube.com, llmrefs.com, and reddit.com.

Pricing prompts stood apart. The “Pricing & Cost” cluster cited siftly.ai, slatehq.com, and therankmasters.com most, all AI-visibility vendor domains, where most other clusters leaned toward UGC and review sites like Reddit and YouTube.

If you’re trying to figure out how to monitor brand mentions across ChatGPT and Perplexity specifically, that’s a narrower problem than “getting cited” in general, and it's worth treating separately.

What this means for your content

Pricing content should live on a page, not a roundup.

The Pricing & Cost cluster cited vendor domains (siftly.ai, slatehq.com, therankmasters.com) directly, not third-party comparison or roundup sites. If pricing is a topic you want cited on, a clear, crawlable pricing page is more likely to get pulled than a blog post explaining pricing in general terms.

How-to content is competing with Reddit and YouTube, not other blogs.

Both how-to clusters put reddit.com at the top, with youtube.com landing in the top three each time, though it’s not always the runner-up. A well-written blog post answering the same question is competing against a forum thread and a video, not against another company’s how-to page.

Fundamentals and tool-comparison content rewards long-form authority.

“AEO Fundamentals” and “AEO Tools & Platforms” leaned on hubspot.com and tryprofound.com, both heavily cited, authority-style blog domains in this study. That’s the safer bet for evergreen educational content compared to how-to or pricing topics.

No single startup dominates, which means citation share is winnable.

With the top ten AI-visibility vendors spread across a 10-point range, there's no incumbent so far ahead that content-driven citation share is out of reach for a smaller player.

No single AI-visibility startup owns this category, and no single topic determines who gets cited either. Where a brand shows up depends on the intersection of the two: which vendors are already earning trust in that space, and which type of source — vendor page, forum, video, or blog — the topic favors in the first place.

If you’re comparing platforms for tracking your own citation performance, we broke down how the major AI visibility monitoring platforms stack up against each other. And if you want to see exactly when Google AI Overviews cites your brand, that’s worth checking on its own.
